Not really thinking of myself as much of that type of artist, they told me the theme (which is Hope for Sale), and I came up with the idea of doing a short story as a comic page. I also figured it'd be a good learning experience and practice going into a short comic I'm doing for an anthology with some friends.

One of the biggest challenges was getting all of the right storytelling poses and breaking them into panels that would all fit onto one standard size comic page (I just liked the idea of using that type of guideline). After finally getting it laid out, I once again learned that my roughs tend to be far too rough, which means I have to do a lot more decision-making putting down tightened pencils. Also, I tend not to realize how many hands I'm actually putting into shots, and halfway through I start cursing myself for leaving myself all these tricky hand poses I now have to design. Despite spreading the final pencils over two days (1/3 the first day, 2/3 the second) , I notice that I didn't really start to loosen up until maybe the 10th panel, after which the drawings look a lot more loose and confident, I think.

What else did I learn? No matter how loose/light you may lay things down, there's going to get to a point where it won't erase if you redraw it too much. Panel 5, I'm looking at you.

Strongest Panels I think are the bottom row, and the two in the middle of row 3. Weakest? the first two in Row 3, and the first 3 panels in Row 2. Which is funny, as they were some of the strongest poses I thought I had when roughing it all out.

Here's an update on the Bugbear monster I've been working on in 3d. I'm at a point where I believe the modeling is mostly done, and it's at 6871 tris. That's a bit higher than I wanted, but I'm pretty happy with how it came out. I've done some basic rigging/jointing tests and I was pretty surprised with how well it was working. Some of the difficulties I found were trying to strike a balance between an overall graphic shape, and how much anatomical detail to put in. I'm going to attempt to do the fur the same way it was handled on the Colossi in Shadow of the Colossus; multiple layers of painted fur with alpha channels; so that will require a good amount of work on texture painting.

Just something I did in a figure drawing class tonight that I was pretty happy with. Looking around on the web I wasn't too impressed with some of the other designs that have been produced for this creature. I did a few pages of rough sketches for head designs last year; and one always stood out as creepy and somewhat goblin-ish, which was a right step in the direction I wanted to go. I pulled it out again recently; and started making some tweaks on the design, and after making some silhouette shapes, I put the two together and managed to pull out the final concept. I'm pretty happy with it, and I think it'll look great once it's fully realized in 3d.

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; They gave me the theme Little Green Men and I made a couple images that I submitted to them. I used this project to sink my teeth a little bit further into Illustrator, the first image I sketched out the main character, the Men in Black character, and the Ufo Alien in pencil, scanned it, then inked the linework and did the text graphic in Illustrator. I then exported it to Photoshop for coloring.

The second image I was a bit looser with the original idea and sketch. It's not as strong of a piece, I think, but I did like that I was able to knock out a second idea, even if it wasn't as fully developed, to show a bit more range. I used the same process, changed up the inking style in Illustrator a little bit but again, did the coloring in Photoshop. I had spent a lot of time on the text graphic, and was pretty happy with how it came out, so I used it for both images.

Ultimately it didn't lead anywhere, and while I probably wouldn't call these portfolio pieces they allowed me to practice and play with some new techniques. I didn't sign any paperwork or NDA, so there shouldn't be any problem, I think, with posting these up for everyone to see.

I'm gonna tell you about an accident, and I don't wanna hear "act of God"!

Here's a quick glimpse of something I'm working on. I linked some of the character designs earlier, and I figured I might as well put up some screenshots and a link to the actual demo if anyone were interested in checking it out. It's an attempt at a 2d side scrolling action game, similar to Devil May Cry but with nowhere near as indepth of a combat system. I mostly wanted to focus on fun characters and actions.

While I did a lot of the work, I had some help from some other members of the class who helped with getting some of the artwork into the game (Ben Lamboy), music (Nick Gingarella and Tyler Boyd) and enemy coding (Nick again).

If you'd like to give it a shot, you can download it here. So my idea was Yoshi from the Super Mario Bros. games dressed as the dragon from Panzer Dragoon. Limit was 3000 polys and one 512x512 texture sheet. Right now it stands at 2934 with all of the armor pieces, and wings. The texture is rather rough at the moment, but given the design of the original character I'm not sure how much more detailed I want to go with it. I'm going to attempt doing a normal map also to add some more detail for the armor, as it's not something I've tried before and want to finally tackle.

And my original concept sketch:

I don't want no war going down tonight

I've been playing around a bit with the Unity3d engine, a cross platform 3d game engine that people have used to develop for PC, Mac, Iphone, the Wii, and even the web. So last week I spent some time trying to mock up the basics of a 2d shooter (control, firing, explosions). Here's what I've got so far:

<noembed>&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;br /&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt; &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;div align="center"&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;br /&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt; This content requires the Unity Web Player&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;br /&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;br /&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;br /&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt; &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;a href="http://www.unity3d.com/unity-web-player-2.x"&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;Install the Unity Web Player today!&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/a&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;br /&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt; &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/div&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;br /&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt; </noembed>

It's pretty rough at this point, but I'm going to work on getting 3d work into it instead of just using primitives. The engine itself isn't too difficult to work with, but it takes a little getting used to. And that's what I'm after, familiarity and proficiency.

And already, it's June.

Haven't posted here in a while, but Matt was on me to do something more finished, and this is what came out of it today. Here's something I did the other day while I decided I was sick of just doing the usual warm up sketches that I've been kind of stuck in a rut doing lately. There's a couple things I don't like about it, might try doing a couple tweaks to the overall gesture to try to loosen him up. Also there's this thing I have about drawing tightly confined spaces, that I never know how far "into" the drawing to set the camera. This is probably more to do with me not planning out any sort of composition, and just coming up with this drawing that has no real action or story to it.

Prepare for silent running!

I realize I haven't posted much in a while, totally my fault. No excuse for it! Anyhow, here's some characters that I've done recently for a webcomic that I was hired to draw. It's for an upcoming webportal for college and high school students, and they wanted a webcomic to go along in a sort of Student Life section. I've done about 4 of the comics so far, and I think I've got a workflow down that works pretty well. Once the site is launched and the comics themselves are live, I'll give it a link here.

Robots, Pt. 1

Always loved the idea of a group of kids getting together and building something awesome (Explorers from the 1980s was one of my favorite movies growing up, it's a shame they don't make movies for kids like they used to), and what kid never wanted to build a robot? Will probably blow this up a good 2-3 times when I work on the final piece, as I should get into the practice of drawing BIGGER.

3x Faster...

For those of you familiar with Gundam or Halo at all, here's an idea that I've been kicking around for a bit, and finally got around to executing a bit. A Char Custom Spartan Armor, a combination of the Armor from Halo and Char's Custom Zaku from Mobile Suit Gundam. This was a bit of a challenge in a couple ways, trying to mash the two together so that they are still recognizable to people familiar with either or both, and then just trying to come up with a style/pose that I liked. I have a couple almost completed sketches in other poses before I decided to stick with this one and ink it. Then, since I originally wanted to get this done for a friend's birthday I got as far on it as I could before midnight so I didn't send it to him too late. My inking ability still leaves a lot to be desired, so time that I could have spent on improving the coloring got eaten up a bit by me trying to clean up inks I wasn't happy with. Probably could use a floor/bg of some sort, now that I think about it.

Update: It's now part of the banner/top image up at www.destroytokyo.com

So long, 2007.

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; First we have the long-time favorite of mine, the Pilot Hi-Tec C. A very fine tip pen that I believe is only available through importers, like Kinokuniya Bookstores. I love doing little sketches with these. Secondly I was looking for a brush pen, but with a bit more control, and I ended up picking up something a bit different. It's a dual tipped (one on either end) Pilot pen, similar to a felt-tip, with one end black and the other a gray. I like it quite a bit so far, and I think it'll be great to use to put in splashes of gray for the little sketches I do with the Hi-Tec. I'm going to be traveling to Hawaii on Friday for some good friends' wedding, and I'm looking forward to all sorts of stuff to draw while I'm there!

Love is a Battlefield

Here's something I've been working on for an independently published video gaming magazine called The Gamer's Quarter. It's put out by some people I met back when InsertCredit.com had a forum that I used to visit. It was a great place for discussion on videogaming and the medium. TGQ grew out of that and I offered to submit a couple art pieces for their latest issue. This is based on one of the articles, and pokes a little bit of fun at the game Gears of War. The theme for it is "Even with all my macho posturing, you still don’t take me seriously."

I'm back!

Hey all, know I've been gone a while. I modeled it out pretty quickly, and at the moment it's pretty much all unwrapped, including the books. For the books, I only made about 3-4 templates, and just made instance copies to populate the bookcase to make it look jam packed with stuff. At the moment it's around 820 triangles, which I would like to get smaller. I think what I'll try is dumping all the faces on the backside of the books that face the back of the shelf where you can't see. As long as it's under 1000 I'll be happy, but I might go back in and add some planes to add more cobwebs hanging from the books. Right now the black polys you see are where existing cobwebs will go, they just haven't been textured yet, and doing a screenshot from Maya on my machine won't alpha-blend those sections out.

Update: I'm about to say the modeling is final, and UVs are done. First up is Big Sword Guy, because he's becoming fun to draw. Apparently SciFi guy isn't as favored much at the moment so I'll be putting a bit more work into redesigning him a little bit (personally I think he looks great). Next is the character who will probably end up being a mid boss or the end boss of the first stage. White guy who thinks he's a Japanese Samurai; he'll probably be introduced flanked by fangirls on each side of him, and will have a standing rivalry with Big Sword Guy that will be brought up in dialogue or something.

After that, two characters from a later stage based around a trip to the RenFaire; and then SciFi Con nerds. From the way brainstorming sessions are going each stage is going to be a descent through various cons and beating the hell out of the people therein. And then maybe a final trip to the mythical land of JAPAN.

FA part 2:

Some more Fanboys Attack! stuff that I did on the train yesterday. Ended up a bit more centered than I would have liked, and just coming up with a pose that i liked was trouble enough.

This is where I was last night:
And here's the final:

Needed to take a break from 3d this weekend. I really enjoyed Ico once I gave it the chance it deserved, and Shadow/Wanda is just really...beautiful at times, and Shadow is turning out to be just as enjoyable, and beautiful, art-wise. Might try a hand at designing a Colossus of my own.

I have a thing with treasure chests, I guess. I think they can be fun to draw, so I kind of kicked this out this evening in the hopes of coming up with a prop to design/model for both a 2d and 3d portfolio. Going for something a bit cartoony, kind of WOW-ish in line quality. Maybe I'll actually get a *finished* piece up on this blog before the week is out.

motoslave wip, part 1

Ingame, Rev.1

It's been a long weekend, but I've finally got Priss into Unreal and working. There are still a couple skinning and rigging things that could be tweaked; I want to get a specularity map working on her to make her suit all shiny like, and just a better looking texture in general. But at the moment I'm pretty happy with it. Next will be to get the motorslave bike working as a ridable vehicle, I think. So my computer died...so I have been going through a big hassle to get my files off so I can work on it while it gets repaired. I'm not great with texturing so I figured I'd start working with some simpler things. They're both still in progress, but they need to be dirtied up a bit more, and a little bit more detail added. It's slow going but hopefully as I do more I'll get a bit more efficient.

Been working in 3d a bit this last week or so; trying to get some stuff done that I can throw into Unreal Tournament 2004 just to understand a bit more about working within a game engine's specs, and doing some stuff for a 3d portfolio. I've always wanted to model Priss from Bubblegum Crisis in 3d; it's something I've started and stopped every couple years; this time I think I'm actually close to finishing it. It's around 2500 polys right now; I want to keep her under 3k but I still have to find a way of modeling some underform to connect all the armor pieces together. The left hand isn't done either, just the fingers.

I'm also working on doing the motorcycle version of the Motorslave motorcycle; I'm going to try to do it in a way that the same pieces could be used to make the Motoroid/battlesuit form. And then if it's possible make it transform...but that's a long ways off. Have to get it modeled and working as a motorcycle vehicle first.

Camping sketches, 7-17-06; The exciting Conclusion...

Here's a more refined sketch that I was trying to turn into a background/layout, using 3 depth/value layers: The far mountain range in the far bg, a midrange hill with a lot of trees, and the trees/bushes in the closest foreground layer. I think I might have messed up the values when I scanned it into Photoshop and played with the contrast. The rest I did as just playing around with shapes/proportion variety as some head drawings. Just kind of went off of what I saw John Nevarez do at the EAA seminar he gave back in May.

Camping sketches, 7-15-06

Just some sketches from over the weekend, I went camping with some friends up at Edison Lake (photos are here if you're interested: http://flickr.com/photos/Konamicode/). I did about a page a day. This was from Saturday. Nothing too spectacular, this is typically how a page in my sketchbook looks - lots of scribbly stuff that doesn't really go anywhere, just me throwing lines down, the rest of the stuff from the weekend will be a bit more refined/edited, and just more...interesting.

...continued, again!

More of a Gackt-style GH hero this time. Since I've been going through a GH withdrawal, I immediately started cranking out a couple sketches for a character. I'm going to do more tomorrow, and try out some different types of characters, but for now I wanted to start off with a hardcore type guy, the ear plugs, annoying goatee, wearing some sort of prison coverall with torn off sleeves, and probably full sleeve tattoos.
